http://www.marbury.sa.edu.au

AIMS OF THE CONFERENCE

  • To exchange experiences with other alternative/progressive schools

  • To share practices, perspectives and stories

  • To discuss current theoretical perspectives within alternative/progressive education

  • To explore current socio-political issues relating to education

  • To further an organised network of like minded schools within Australia

GENERAL INFORMATION

The venue:

Marbury School is situated within the beautiful and rich environment of the historic Wairoa estate in Aldgate and comprises heritage buildings and gardens, bushland, playing fields and modern school facilities. The school is 25 minutes by car and 35 minutes by bus from Grenfell Street in Adelaide city.

Getting Marbury:

Car: From the city, take the South Eastern freeway toward Stirling and Mount Barker. Turn off the freeway at the Stirling exit and turn left onto Mt Barker Rd. Entrance to the school is on your right just after (next to) the Argentinian Restaurant (Asador Grill) and pedestrian crossing.

Bus: From Grenfell Street (outside Harris Scarfe) take Transitplus bus numbers 163, 166 or 840 to Marbury which is at bus stop number 40.

Accommodation:

Basic accommodation is available at the school. There are several Bed and Breakfast places as well as hotels and motels but few are within walking distance of the school.

About Marbury School:

Marbury was founded as an alternative/progressive school in 1971. It caters for Kindergarten children (4 year olds) through to Year 12 students.

At Marbury we believe that:

  • Optimal intellectual, emotional, social and ethical growth of children occurs naturally in an enriched environment free from judgement, coercion, manipulation, punishment and competitiveness.

  • A school provides an extension of family life and a bridge into the wider world.

  • Supportive, caring, personal relationships with teachers are critical for the child's growth at school. From here the child's ability to develop healthy interpersonal relationships can be nourished and a love of learning and discovery encouraged through children and adults exploring life together.

  • A less formal structure and one in which children are supported in finding their own solutions to difficulties provides the greatest opportunity for social learning.

  • An atmosphere of mutual care, respect and responsibility is the most powerful influence for ethical development. Consultation, cooperation, the pursuit of working agreements and an absence of punishment lead to self-discipline, rather than passive compliance or active rebellion.
