THE CELTS

This web page is designed to assist with the next section of the Ancient History Course. In particular our work on the Celts. Celtic Society was widely spread across Europe. Celtic remains have been found as far apart as Spain, Hungary and Ireland. In particular, however it seems that Celtic Society was centered in Central Europe, around modern Germany and Austria, through France and Belgium to the United Kingdom.

Below you will find a series of exercises and links relating to this topic.

Text Box: TimelineThe first step toward understanding a society as complicated as that of the Celts involves understanding the chronology of the spread of Celtic Culture across Europe. Create a Timeline covering this from the earliest references to the Roman withdrawal from Britain. Each entry need be no longer than a single line

Text Box: ResearchResearch two burial sites; choose one from the Halstatt and one from the La Tene cultures. Compare the mode of burial, compare the goods found in the site, compare the origins (where known) of the grave goods. What deductions can you reach? How were the two cultures similar? How were they different? What can we learn about Celtic Culture from such a study? This should be at least one page, relate your piece directly to the evidence you find.

Give evidence to support your answers.2) What relationship did the Celts of first century Britain and France have with the Romans?3) Who was Vercingetorix?4) Who were the Iceni?5) Roman Gaul played an important part in the Empire.
