Marbury School is an incorporated non-profit association controlled by an elected Board of Governors and was founded in 1970 as a coeducational, non-sectarian, independent, non-competitive, non-authoritarian school. It opened in February, 1971 at Wayville, near Adelaide, as a primary school, and in 1972 accepted pupils to year eleven level. The school moved from Wayville to Aldgate, 18 kilometres from Adelaide, in the Mount Lofty Ranges when the "Wairoa" estate of 33 acres was purchased for the school in 1972 by Burwell Dodd. In 1973 Marbury became a boarding school and pupils were taken to matriculation standard. Between 1981 and 1993, the Marbury senior school was located at "Beechwood" on Snow's Road. Marbury owned the building and the Botanic Gardens owned the garden. The unusual arrangement of a Botanic Gardens and a school co-existing in this manner was very successful and to the mutual advantage of both parties. From 1977 to 1980 the school owned another large estate nearby, Keroma, where the boarding house was conducted. In 1990 the "Joyce Dodd Building", now the Junior Primary Centre, was opened. In 1993 a federal grant enabled a new Primary building to be constructed, overlooking Wairoa's heritage garden. The school, together with the Dodd Family, is working to restore these beautiful gardens. Marbury has a well qualified staff with a ratio of less than fourteen students per teacher. One of the founders of Marbury, Margaret Langley, B.A. (Hons.) F.A.C.E. (1920-1998), was the principal of the school from its inception until her retirement in 1997. Mr. Adrian Flavell BA (Hons), M.A.C.E. held the position until the end of 2000. Dr Adrienne Huber was the Principal of Marbury School for the following eigtheen months when a College of Staff took over the day to day management of the school. Dr. Brian Webber stepped into the position of consultant Principal for the second half of 2003. Marbury School is currently administered by twin Principals Mr. Ian Penny and Mrs. Jan Carson. |
