It is in the Primary School that attitudes to emotional, intellectual, social and personal growth, begun in the Junior Primary section, are consolidated. The time spent here is a mixture of work and play with as little emphasis on the differentiation between these behaviours as can be arranged. There is a concerted effort by all staff to avoid schoolwork being seen as something composed of discrete elements. Art merges with Science, for example.
While the curriculum is geared to the SACSA frameworks, there is sufficient latitude to ensure that Primary children are able to experience learning as pleasurable and relevant. The Primary School offers Science, Music, Maths, IT, Technology, English, SOSE, LOTE, Sport, Art, Drama and Media.
No homework is given to Primary School children. This has not proved necessary for the academic or intellectual development of the students. At the end of Year Six, Marbury students are quite ready for the challenge of Middle School; in fact those students who move to other schools usually find that they are ahead of their peers. Those who have come all the way through from the Marbury Junior Primary School tend also to see learning as pleasurable and productive. This puts them in a better position than students who have been "turned off" by too heavy a stress on academic learning or by insufficient attention to personal skills development. The social and structural life of the Primary School is discussed at regular meetings where students begin to learn the skills that they will need in meetings in the Secondary School. Primary students come to know the staff who teach in other parts of the school and are able to broaden their range of social contacts by interacting with adults who are not their class teachers and with Secondary students. |
