Secondary students at Marbury study a range of subjects from years Seven to Twelve. In the Middle school years (Seven to Ten) students are exposed to a range of curriculum areas that includes English, Mathematics, Science, Studies of Society and Environment, French, Media Studies, Art, Drama, Cooking, Gardening, Photography, IT, Music, Japanese and Sport. Students are also encouraged to use the facilities in The Barn and are further encouraged to combine subject areas for example English and Music, Media, Society and Environment and Science or Art and Mathematics. Year 11 and 12 students can study a wide ranging curriculum in accordance with SACE which includes core subjects such as English, Maths and Science. In addition subjects such as Drama, Ancient History, Photography, Classics, Geology and Art. The Secondary school was structured in a new way for 2003. In the past year seven was considered to be the final year of Primary School. From this year Marbury has established a combined year seven/eight class. This is intended to aid what is often a traumatic transition from Primary to Secondary School. The students spend the bulk of their day with one teacher, but also are exposed to the notion of more specialised teachers for other subjects. In addition Marbury also has a combined Year nine/ten class who share lessons if not educational programmes.
Marbury students are also encouraged to follow their personal interests which can be fostered by the tailoring of individual study programs, such as the project created for the Year Ten students that combined art, history and literature (The Diary of Anne Frank) and resulted in the wax carving displayed on the Students' Work page. Our students are also encouraged to be active in areas of political interest; over the years students have been keen supporters of Amnesty International and, for such a small school, have raised large sums of money for a variety of causes including the East Timor Relief Fund. The school tends to follow the interests of the children and in recent years students have been keen on Cricket; a group of Year Nine and Ten students constructed their own turf pitch to play a match on. Hockey has also proven popular and the Marbury Hockey Team from time to time plays matches with another school.
Close contact between the year levels is fostered by a weekly "General Meeting" in which issues of concern to the running of the community are discussed.
The Secondary School has been on excursions to most states in Australia and all around SA at one time or another. All Secondary students have an annual excursion. This year the School will be going skiing. A separate senior camp is envisaged as a "winding down" time after the stresses of the end of year exams and senior students also have an end of year dinner. The Parents and Friends Association holds regular working bees which are often also attended by senior students and ex-students. At the end of the academic year it is also expected that the Senior Students remain at school for the final weeks. During this time they are involved in projects such as the construction of playground equipment or painting of buildings or fittings. It is also not unknown for the entire secondary school to stop for a day when the students have arranged to work in the garden. |
